Barcode medication administration is an innovative asset to nurses everywhere. It is one of the most effective ways for the nursing staff to ebb the medication errors that occur on the floor.
How does this tool work?
A bar code scanner is wirelessly hooked up to a facility computer. Nurses will walk around with this convenient handheld device and scan the patient’s wristband barcode, the medication’s unique barcode, and his/ her own personal ID barcode. This verifies that the nurse is certified to administer this medication and also that they are giving the correct medication to the correct patient. The barcode system does that by running a system check and matching up the medication with the patient name. This information transaction is communicated with many other systems in the facility, thus information is quickly and efficiently shared throughout healthcare and management officials.
Advantages:
· Increases overall patient care and safety
· Minimizes possible medication administration errors.
· Allows informatics coordinators to monitor medication delays
· Informatics coordinators are able to see the exact times medications were given.
· Greatly heightens communication clarity between nurses and the pharmaceutical departments· Most importantly, patient satisfaction escalates immensely.
The bar code system was implemented at my previous hospital and made dispensing medications a lot easier. I still found from attending the medication committee there, that the medication errors that were still occurring were from nurses bypassing the actual scan of the med or the patient, due to obscured bar codes, etc. Have the new systems made overriding more difficult, or prompt nurses to contact admitting (for a new patient band) or the pharmacy for assistance rather than skipping the "5 rights" checked by the computer?
ReplyDeleteI remember being caught up in the hustle and bustle of my shift's drill and almost mistakenly attempted hanging the wrong iv bag but was alerted by the coding system when scanned on patient's wrist band. Bar-coding is definitely the best thing that's happened to medication error intervention.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't have bar-coding at my facility, I feel that it is a very effective way to prevent medication errors. It keeps track of when medications are administered, which is great for patient satisfaction. I hope to soon get this at my facility to prevent medication errors that may occur.
